The sun is just peeking above the horizon. Its orange and pink hues are a beautiful addition to the sky. The air is crisp and carries the aroma of freshly baked bread from the nearby bakery. The day is a brand new one in our kindergarten in walnut creek can’t wait to see what’s going to happen.
“!Vamos!” “Vamos!” Her eyes sparkle in excitement. The school days are not like the ones you’re used to. We walk down cobblestoned streets and every corner whispers stories of centuries gone by. It feels like we are on a daily pilgrimage.
The kindergarten is tucked between stone buildings dating back to the Middle Ages and olive groves. It is a lively hub of activity with laughter echoing off walls. Senora Lozada greets us upon entering with her warm smile, which could melt even the coldest of hearts. “Buenos Dias,” she sings. Her voice is a soothing melody, setting the tone for the rest of the day.
In this classroom language is not just taught. It’s also lived. Senora López begins a Spanish-language storytime by gathering the children on a colorful rug. This story involves a fox that is mischievous, an enchanted woodland and a mischievous fox. They are all wide-eyed as they listen to every word.
“?Que piensas que hara el zorro?” She asks and encourages them to let their imaginations go wild. They raise their hands in excitement as they make guesses using Spanish phrases laced with laughter and enthusiasm.
The snack time is fast approaching, so it’s out with the bocadillos – simple yet delicious sandwiches which never fail in pleasing tiny tastebuds. Sharing food is about more than eating. It’s about interacting with others over tastes familiar and new.
As the children eat, I can hear parents talking outside. A symphony is created by the blend of languages. One mother shares that her son was taught his first flamenco moves at school just last week. Another tells about how her daughter surprised her friends by reciting poems in both English and Spanish.
Art and craft are the main focus after recess. As young artists freely express themselves, paintbrushes dance on paper.
My daughter proudly showed me her masterpiece — a chaotic swirling color depicting what looks like our cat riding atop an unicorn through space while wearing sunglasses (because why?). Here, creativity knows no limits!
